Which are the biggest differences between SSHL and St Paul’s, concerning the schools as boarding schools?

The biggest difference is that you have externs; because of this our school that has as many students as yours have a much bigger campus. We have American students but also a lot of international students, many of them from Asia.

St Paul’s school has 18 boarding houses that are divided into girl houses and boy houses. Each contain between 20 and 30 students. A big difference is that we change houses every year, which I think is both good and bad. It’s nice to have it like you do, because you become so close to the other people in your house, but it’s also good to get to know new people every year.

We don’t have house parents in the same sense as you do. Instead we have teachers living in adjacent apartments in the houses with their families. They don’t look after us as much as your house parents do.

Even though we don’t have a school uniform we have a dress code; we are not allowed to wear jeans or leisure clothes to class.

Why do people in the US send their children to boarding schools?

Mostly because they are good schools! Most public schools are pretty bad and boarding schools are usually better than most private schools. There is also a tradition in many families to send their kids away.

The opportunity to do sports in the extent that we are offered is also very tempting. Most of the boarding schools are situated in the New England area.

What do you do after school?

After school we usually do an activity like sports for two hours. Then we have dinner. Another difference between our schools is that we have all of our meals in the school cafeteria instead of having some in our boarding houses. Also we don’t have to eat at a specific time but can eat anytime between 5.30 and 7.00 pm. After dinner we are recommended to do homework, but it is not compulsory. At around 10.30 pm we go to bed.

What is the reason you are here at SSHL?

Our school offers a cultural exchange program. Last year I went to France for a year to study the language. When I was given the opportunity to go to Europe once again I immediately took it.

What will you tell your friends about Sweden when you go home?

I will tell them that it’s a really beautiful country. I will also tell them that the weather here is similar to the one in New England, it’s just as cold! The language is really different and hard to understand. But at least I learnt to say: Jag heter Grace! Most of all I will tell them I had a really good time here at SSHL!
